From Our Sponsor

Introducing the Chainlink Reserve—a strategic reserve of LINK tokens designed to support the long-term growth of the Chainlink Network by accumulating LINK using offchain revenue from large enterprises adopting Chainlink and onchain service usage. Through a unified platform offering, Chainlink is uniquely positioned to power and benefit from the growing tokenization trend as more and more of the world’s largest financial institutions adopt blockchain to tokenize trillions of dollars of assets onchain.

Filecoin: Unlocking Real-Time, Verifiable Hot Storage with PoDP

By: Armita

For most of its history, Filecoin has been known for large-scale, decentralized archival storage, often compared to AWS Glacier. This made it a strong choice for permanence and integrity, but retrieval speed was a limitation. Even when storage providers kept unsealed copies for faster access, there was no cryptographic way to confirm that those hot copies were actually available without performing a full retrieval. This made it less suitable for latency-sensitive workloads like AI inference or real-time web applications.

In May 2025, the network introduced Proof of Data Possession (PoDP), a cryptographic proof that allows storage providers to demonstrate they hold a complete, immediately available copy of data without unsealing or transferring it.

Here’s what PoDP changes:

  • From hours to sub-seconds: Retrieval latency drops dramatically, while preserving Filecoin’s verifiable integrity guarantees.

  • Verifiable hot storage: Availability is proven with lightweight, 160-byte challenges (CPU-friendly and cost-efficient).

  • Mutable collections: Clients can add, delete, or modify data without re-sealing entire sectors.

  • AI-ready performance: Enables dataset delivery and model fine-tuning at speeds suitable for inference and training workflows.

  • Broader use cases: Supports dApp frontends, real-time media delivery, developer environments, and protocol-defined retention policies.

Why this matters:

  • From trust-based to provable: Hot storage can now be offered with cryptographic assurances, enabling enterprise-grade service commitments.

  •  AI alignment: AI pipelines, model training, and inference can run directly on instantly retrievable, verifiable datasets.

  • Ecosystem expansion: When combined with the Avalanche × Filecoin Data Bridge, PoDP can enable modular, verifiable data flows across multiple blockchain ecosystems.

Strategic implications:

PoDP moves Filecoin beyond “cold storage for Web3” into a multi-service, verifiable cloud layer capable of both archival and low-latency retrieval. This broadens the network’s potential workloads, from AI infrastructure to cross-chain data markets and performance-driven Web3 applications.

The launch of PoDP also reflects a wider trend in decentralized infrastructure: moving from single-purpose, niche services toward full-stack, enterprise-grade data solutions. By combining verifiability, speed, and interoperability, Filecoin shows that decentralized networks can meet the performance and trust requirements of AI, enterprise, and multi-chain ecosystems, potentially narrowing the gap with, and in some cases exceeding, traditional cloud capabilities.
