Bitcoin has faced hurdles in programmability and custody, but upgrades like Lightning Network, Taproot, and future innovations like OP_CAT and BitVM, alongside a 378% rise in BTC bridged to sidesystems (53,200 BTC in 2024), signal progress.
Analysts suggest BTCFi could attract institutions seeking 3-5% APR for ETF returns, while retail holders may embrace native solutions like OP_NET, which brings smart contracts to Bitcoin.
